JMHS Campus College Support
CAP partners with Pasadena’s John Muir High School to provide college readiness workshops and one-to-one college advisement on campus during and after school to all students on a drop-in basis. Because students do not need to enroll in our programs permanently, they are free to access the help they need, when they need it. We work closely with instructors and counselors to insure our programs fit curriculum needs.
Recent Program Successes:
- We’re planning in-class College Basics Presentations to ALL the students at John Muir High School this school year
- In 2010-2011, CAP served 175 students, a 17% increase over the previous school year
- 46% of the 2011 senior class at JMHS utilized CAP’s after school program, which is a 2% increase over the previous year and a 27% increase over 2009
- Last year, CAP saw a 10% increase in the frequency with which the average student utilized our programs
- Of the 70 graduating seniors who consistently attended our programs in the last two years, 97% now attend or will attend college, and 83% attend/will attend four-year colleges and universities
- CAP After School program participants received over $830,000 in scholarships and grants for college in 2011, a 350% increase over the previous year.
- In 2011, 40 juniors completed a SAT prep course with CAP and Study Smart Tutors thanks to the Pasadena Community Foundation
- In addition to school day hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays, CAP has its own on campus office where staff hold drop-in hours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays throughout the school day
- Valeria Sosa and Destiny Iwuoma, consistent CAP participants in 2010-11, were both Gates Millennium scholarship finalists, and Valeria won this prestigious prize; both students worked with CAP to complete their Gates Millennium packets and now attend UC Berkeley
We are proud to report that students consistently feel that CAP’s programs helped make the college readiness process less intimidating and mysterious.
Our workshops focus on such topics as: SAT preparation, personal statement/scholarship essay writing, choosing colleges, and successful completion of the typical college application. Our college advisement allows students to work on any college-related projects individually with CAP staff and volunteers.
Students learn about our after school programs through presentations and workshops in the high school classroom. All of our classroom visits are collaborative efforts between teachers and CAP staff to insure impactful and enriching opportunities for students as they navigate their own paths to college.
Kendall, a 2008 graduate who is now a senior at Spelman College, told us, “I was
somewhat stressed with trying to do it all on my own and CAP helped me feel like I wasn’t alone in the process and that assistance was there.”
In addition to assisting students with their college needs, CAP works closely with teachers and counselors to ensure the quality of our curriculum and programs, and to offer them the best possible assistance. Charel Bailey, a former JMHS counselor who now works directly for the Pasadena Unified School District says, “I am so impressed with CAP and what it has to offer our students. CAP has created a way to work hand and hand with our Counseling Departments.”
